How Much Emergency Fund Should I Have UK?

Sprault Research5 September 20262 min read

MoneyHelper’s rule of thumb for a UK emergency fund is three to six months of essential outgoings held in an instant-access savings account. Essentials means rent or mortgage, basic food, utilities, insurance, work transport and minimum debt payments — not subscriptions, takeaways or holidays.

If essentials are £1,500 a month, three months is £4,500 and six months is £9,000; the target follows your essentials, not your salary. Lean toward three months if you have a stable job and no dependants; lean toward six (or more) if you’re a sole earner, have dependants, work in a volatile industry, or are self-employed. If you’re starting from near zero, a £500–£1,000 starter buffer is a practical first step before chasing the full range.

From 6 April 2026, Statutory Sick Pay for eligible employees is up to £123.25 a week for up to 28 weeks and is payable from the first full day of sickness (GOV.UK) — roughly £534 a month on the weekly flat rate, which is far below most people’s essential bills, so cash you can reach still matters even when sick pay exists.

MoneyHelper notes that high-cost priority debts (credit cards, unauthorised overdrafts, payday loans, doorstep lending, mortgage arrears) may be cheaper to tackle before pouring every spare pound into savings, while a small buffer can still reduce the chance that a repair becomes more expensive debt.

Keep the fund in easy-access savings separate from day-to-day spending, not in fixed bonds, notice accounts or investments that can fall when you need the money. UK deposits are generally FSCS-protected up to £120,000 per eligible person per authorised firm from 1 December 2025 (previously £85,000 — check current limits and shared licences).

Interest outside an ISA may sit within the Personal Savings Allowance (£1,000 basic rate, £500 higher rate, £0 additional rate — GOV.UK); an easy-access cash ISA can also be an option within the annual ISA allowance.
